We are delighted to welcome GHI computers to the KODAK EXPRESS network.
GHI Computers started trading in 2001, and by 2004 had moved to the shop they currently have in the Viking Shopping Centre in Jarrow, Tyne & Wear. Two years later saw an expansion for the business when they secured the adjacent retail premises, linked the two sites and created one large store.
Here we speak to owner Gavin Holder.
Gavin, congratulations on your new KODAK EXPRESS membership. What was the driver for adding the dedicated photo business to your existing retail operation?
"We have provided a photo printing and passport ID service within the GHI Computers shop since purchasing a Kodak instant print kiosk around 5 years ago. With the single kiosk and just one window vinyl displaying the service, we’ve received a steady income stream and have regularly joked that the kiosk had won ‘Employee of the month’ due to its continued success."
"This led to us investigating what we could achieve if we went from a single square meter of the stores footprint to dedicating a large retail space to photo. Following a very thorough evaluation, and getting advice from a wide variety of sources, we decided to create a separate business offering photo services and products with investment in new Kiosks, the Apex system and wide format printing. The large GHI store remains as one open space but we now have two clearly defined trading areas with separate external signage and internal styling."
Why Kodak Express?
"The Kodak brand remains the leading name on the high street for photo services and we felt this identity would give our business the greatest change for success. We visited the Demo KEX Store at Tetenal’s Leicester office and this gave us the confidence and inspiration to see what we could achieve under the KODAK EXPRESS banner."
We see you’ve dedicated a large graphic area to ID photos.
"Photo ID services form a key part of our strategy and since creating the KODAK EXPRESS store and installing the Passport and ID station with the large graphic wall section, we have instantly jumped from doing half a dozen passport prints a day to over twenty – and this is before we have completed the store and begun advertising/marketing the services properly."

What plans do you have for Marketing the new business?
"Once we have completed the store interior we’ll be doing a leaflet distribution in the local area along with press advertising, PR, and promotions in the Viking Shopping Centre that we are based in."
"Soon after the new signage went up we were approached by a local photography club to provide services to them and provide their club members with a ‘special club offer’. Through some further work and word of mouth this has already led us to building a relationship with half a dozen clubs in the area – all with 20 to 30 or more members."
